The ociations we make with phonetics are tied to our linguistic experience, which means those whom we ociate with ("our" community) and our education. So I would argue what you see as "close to fate" simply has to do with, shall we say, your day-to-day parlance. It relates to why some folks never understand what other folks are saying (that *never* happens here on R&S), because even though we are all speaking english (well...mostly), we use very different collective dictionaries. Xtians and atheists don't merely disagree on ultimate reality, we have a different basic understanding of the reality before us because our seemingly common language...well...isn't.
