Courtesy referral for real estate agent: is it a common practice?
We have recently moved to VA from Cali, and just started working with a local real estate (RE) agent whom we really like. My wife’s close cousin is also a RE agent in CA. He asked if we would allow him to do a “courtesy referral” with our current agent (presumably to get some sort of referral commission?) I feel funny about it and wonder if our agent would be very offended by the suggestion (for letting one of our family cutting into his commission)? Certainly the situation would be different if our agent was introduced by my wife’s cousin, but we found the agent ourselves at the first place. My wife has difficulty saying no to family. Her cousin ures us that “courtesy referral” is a common practice for RE agents to establish networks around the country, and that our agent would be doing the same. We appreciate answers from RE agents or someone knows more about how RE works than us. Thanks.
