Why did david use a sling AND a stone against goliath?

Because slings--merely a term, by the way, not like you use to hold an injured arm--are more portable and their use both easier and more flexible than the throwing stick. Without which, the stone would just have made Goliath mad. See, the purpose of the sling or throwiing stick is to increase the velocity of the thrown stone, thereby increasing its capability.
